Positive Behaviour Support in Melbourne

Positive Behaviour Support

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) Positive Behavior Support, is a proactive approach to managing and reducing challenging behaviours in various settings, such as schools, homes, and communities. It focuses on understanding the reasons behind the behaviours and implementing strategies to promote positive behavior change. The goal of a PBS plan is to improve the quality of life for individuals by enhancing their social, emotional, and behavioural skills. It’s especially useful for children with autism, as well as those with intellectual, learning, developmental and social challenges.

When you receive this kind of support, you’ll work with a qualified therapist who will help you understand what triggers your emotions and behaviours. Together, you’ll develop strategies and skills to help you manage your emotions more effectively.

Who can benefit?

Positive Behaviour Support can help anyone who is experiencing challenging behaviours to better navigate social and community situations. If you're over 7 years of age and have an NDIS plan with funding for "Improved Relationships" in the capacity building supports category, you may be eligible for this kind of support.

What's involved?

You can expect immediate contact and regular reviews. We will observe behaviours of concerns and undertake discussions with key stakeholders. Our key steps include

1. Conduct a Comprehensive Assessment:
Collect detailed information on your strengths, needs, preferences, and current behaviours through interviews, observations, and assessments. Determine the specific situations, events, or stimuli that trigger the challenging behaviours and any patterns or trends in the behaviours.

2. Establish Clear and Measurable Goals:
Collaborate with you, family members, caregivers, and other professionals to identify realistic and meaningful goals for behaviour change. Break down the goals into specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound objectives to guide the development of targeted interventions.

3. Develop Individualised Behaviour Support Strategies:
Create proactive and positive strategies that focus on teaching and reinforcing appropriate replacement behaviours rather than simply punishing or eliminating challenging behaviours. Select and implement interventions that are supported by research and tailored to your unique needs and circumstances.

4. Create a Structured Support Plan:
Detail the specific interventions, strategies, and techniques to be used, including when, where, and how they will be implemented. Involve you, family members, caregivers, and other relevant stakeholders in the planning process to ensure a collaborative and person-centered approach.

5. Provide Training and Support:
Provide training and guidance to you, family members, caregivers, and other professionals involved in implementing the PBS plan. Establish a support network and resources to assist with the ongoing implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of the PBS plan.

6. Monitor Progress and Make Adjustments:
Continuously collect data on the you behaviour and progress towards the goals to evaluate the effectiveness of the PBS plan. Regularly review the PBS plan and make necessary adjustments to the strategies, interventions, and goals based on the your changing needs and progress.

7. Foster a Positive and Supportive Environment:
Encourage positive interactions, relationships, and communication among you, family members, caregivers, and support team. Foster an environment that promotes understanding, acceptance, and inclusion, and provides opportunities for you to succeed and thrive.

We’ll work together to understand what’s right for you.

Depending on your needs and objectives and to ensure you get the best possible results, your personalised program may also incorporate additional therapies, such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech pathology and more.
