The Body Weight Supported Treadmill (BWST) combines a supportive harness system with treadmill walking to help people safely practise stepping, standing and balance. It allows earlier more intensive walking rehabilitation by reducing the load on joints and supporting safe, upright posture.
During BWSTT, users are partially supported in a harness while walking on a motorised treadmill. The harness reduces body weight load, making it easier and safer to practise stepping movements, balance and transitions like standing or sitting.
Therapists can progressively decrease the amount of support as strength, coordination and confidence improve. BWSTT promotes natural gait patterns and encourages neuroplasticity, helping rebuild walking ability after neurological or musculoskeletal injury.
The system can also be adapted for practising other key skills, including crawling, standing balance and sit-to-stand transfers.
