Lidia was 57 years old when she experienced a stroke several days after being diagnosed with the rare autoimmune disorder Guillain-Barré syndrome.
She was taken by ambulance to Royal North Shore Hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery. After three months in hospital, Lidia was discharged with limited mobility and communication.
Her husband, Franco, describes her experience as unusual, with none of the specialists they consulted having encountered both conditions at once. Having spoken to friends who recommended Royal Rehab, they were grateful when Lidia was accepted into the inpatient program.
Lidia began her rehabilitation journey at Royal Rehab in September 2021 and transitioned to outpatient therapy at Royal Rehab LifeWorks the following January.
Her therapy has included physiotherapy, occupational therapy and speech pathology, delivered both onsite and at home. She has used the ZeroG, Tyromotion suite and Armeo Power technology during sessions supported by clinical staff. As her participation increased, her therapy was adjusted to match her evolving goals. Franco says new activities help Lidia stay engaged and motivated.
“The staff are just terrific – they encourage all the time. If I say, ‘I can’t do any more,’ they say, ‘you can do more,’ and I do it,” says Lidia.
“Royal Rehab has the right staff and technology which is what you need for neuroplasticity,” adds Franco.
A year on from her stroke, Lidia is regaining confidence in her abilities. She is building independence in her daily activities, and she continues to use her wheelchair and explore new ways to stay active.
At home, her support team also plays an important role. When she experiences challenges with word-finding, speech therapist Yris works with her on strategies, while Franco encourages and supports her communication.
Looking ahead, Lidia says she’s excited to cook again, go on a holiday, and enjoy the outdoors. With determination and the support of those around her, she continues to take on each new challenge.
