Functional capacity assessment

235 Morrison Road, Ryde, NSW
1800 518 180
Monday to Friday – 8:00am to 5:00pm

A functional capacity assessment is a detailed evaluation that helps build a clear picture of a person’s ability to manage daily tasks.

Conducted by a qualified occupational therapist, the assessment highlights both strengths and areas where support may be needed due to disability, injury, or health conditions.

These insights are valuable for setting meaningful goals, developing tailored support plans, and informing applications for funding, such as through the NDIS.

Who can benefit

  • Living with a disability or condition: You may be living with a disability, injury, or health condition that makes everyday tasks more difficult — and you’re looking for ways to regain function and independence.
  • Navigating the NDIS: You might need a clear, evidence-based report to support your NDIS access, planning meeting, or review, and want professional input that reflects your goals and needs.
  • Seeking more independence: You’re looking for personalised recommendations that can help you do more on your own, feel more confident, and improve your quality of life.
  • Needing the right supports: You may be unsure what supports, assistive technology, or home modifications are right for you — and you want expert guidance to help you make informed decisions.

What to expect

Initial consultation and interview

A detailed discussion to gather information about your health history, current challenges, daily routines, and personal goals. This may also include completion of standardised assessments or questionnaires.

Observation of functional tasks

The therapist may observe you performing key activities such as mobility, personal care, domestic tasks, or completing an activity in the community such as grocery shopping, to assess how your physical, cognitive, and psychosocial function impacts your every life.

Comprehensive domain assessment

Assessment may include assessing areas such as communication, mobility, self-care, social interaction, learning, and participation in work or leisure, with standardised measures used where relevant.

Collaboration with your care network

Input from family, carers, your formal support network and other treating professionals may be sought to ensure a well-rounded understanding of your needs and context.

Detailed reporting and recommendations

A formal report will outline functional strengths and limitations and provide holistic, evidence-based recommendations for ongoing support, intervention, assistive technology, or environmental changes to enhance independence and goal attainment.
